Key Office Chair Selection Criteria

The following features are what I was looking for in an ideal office chair for small bodied people. I scoured the internet reading manufactures product descriptions and specifications and read user reviews to find the best office chairs which had these particular features and compared them with one another to choose the single best chair in each of the three price categories (premium, mid range and budget).

Seat height

To ensure that you can place your feet firmly on the ground. When your feet are not able to touch the ground and your legs are dangling over the edge of the chair it can cause discomfort as the thighs take on a greater load and can decrease blood circulation to your feet and toes. So in order to meet the requirement of adequate seat height. it was determined that the seat must be lowered to a minimum of 18 inches or 46cm. Where the seat height can be lowered beyond 18 inches I’ve mentioned it in the review.

Seat depth

This feature is coupled with seat height. The depth of the seat is the distance from the back of the seat to the front of the seat. If the depth of the seat is too great it means that your knees will not be able to comfortably fold over the edge of the seat and allow your feet to touch the ground. It order to allow optimal seat depth for short people I looked for office chairs with a seat depth of 18 inches (46cm) or less.

Arm rests

Using arm rests which are too high can lead to discomfort in the neck and shoulders. In order to prevent this from occurring arm rests should be properly adjusted to suit the person using the chair. Hence height and width adjustable arm rests was an important selection criteria

Lumbar support

Lumbar support is a particularly important ergonomic feature especially when the office chair will be used all day everyday. Adjustable lumbar support ensures you can get just the right amount of support in the right place.

Price

I’ve compared and contrasted a number of different options across many price points. I chose what I believe to be the best office chair for short people in each of the three price ranges (premium, mid range, and budget). There should be a suitable option among the three of them to suit your needs.

The Etros series by Alera features several great office chairs in their range, most notably for short people is the Mid Back Petite Office Chair. It’s dimensions are perfect for the smaller user. This is one of very few office chairs in this price range that has the features of more expensive office chairs. Some of those features include:

  • Adjustable lumbar support – a feature generally reserved to mid range and premium office chairs. This allows users to set their level of support to suit their preferences.
